BESS

What Is a BESS, and Does Your Business Need One?

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) stores energy โ€” from solar or the grid โ€” and releases it strategically, most commonly to reduce peak-demand charges that many commercial electricity tariffs include.

If your business pays a demand charge based on your highest usage spike in a billing cycle, a BESS can discharge during that spike instead of drawing full power from the grid, potentially cutting that portion of the bill significantly.

BESS also provides backup during outages and can shift solar generation into evening hours when it would otherwise go unused (or be exported at a lower rate).

Whether it's worth it depends on your tariff structure and how spiky your demand profile actually is โ€” a load study is the right first step before sizing one.
